Trees Do not a Forest Make . . .

Your Physical Body and a Forest 

Are  Both Eco-Systems

Many people think of a forest as just a bunch of trees.   They do not realize that a forests is a complex, interactive eco-system.   They do not realize that each tree in every forest is, in and of itself, also a complex, interactive eco-system.  

Let's say this again and this time, we'll be a little closer to home.   Your physical body is not a single entity.  It is a a complex, interactive eco-system consisting or trillions of independent, interactive cells.   The cells are organized into tissue, organs, and systems, that are  independent, yet interactive making up what you call your physical body.   

In addition, your body is made up of trillions of independent microorganisms so small that they are literally invisible to the naked eye.  Each of these trillions of tiny life forms is an essential part of your body.   If you kill one portion of the body, the entire body dies.   

The exact same this is true in a forest.   It's also true of  a meadow, a swamp, a pond, a lake, a river, the ocean, the air, the soil, et cetera.   Every part of the Earth is just like a cell or an organ in your body.   Kill one part  the the rest suffers.   Kill enough parts and the body (the Earth) as we know it, dies to the form we know, and rebirths into a new form.

Two Sick Analogies

We frequently here the story about the forests-destroyers  planting seedling were majestic multi-hundred-year-old trees once stood.   They make a big deal of this, and tout how wonderful they are because planting seedlings  (tiny, "new-born"  trees)  in the midst of the devastation that left after the forest ecosystem has been destroyed.    Such references are either grossly manipulative in the message they are sending or the destroyers are incredibly naive or they are outright stupid.

Imagine for a moment, that we have arrived an your home today, uninvited and unannounced and we are in the process or tearing your house down because we want the lumber that's in it.    When you protest, we say, don't worry, we are going to leave you with a six 2x4's,  three flat boards, and 150 bent nails so your can begin to build yourself a new house.   

Here's another favorite among families.   "We are here to protect your babies, but there's a price to pay.   When those babies reach age eighteen, we are going to send them off to whatever war we have going at that time and if he or she gets killed, don't be concerned, you can just go ahead and have another child."

Some simple Alternatives

Instead of cutting down the last of our virgin forests, suppose we were to consider these two alternatives. 

Instead of destroying our forests and planting trees that take fifty to one hundred years to produce the wood fibers we want, suppose we plant hemp for fiber.   Hemp can be grown and harvested in a single season and provides stronger fiber than that which is in the wood of trees.

Instead of destroying our forests for lumber, suppose we use stainless steel for structural support in building homes  and bamboo for such things as flooring and furniture.  The stainless steel will not deteriorate and when the structure is dismantled, the steel will be a good as it was on the day it was put into the building.  Simply unfasten the stainless steel bolts and use the material again where ever it is needed.  

Another Alternative:   

Instead of killing the last of the world's elephants for the ivory in their tusks, suppose we ban the sale of anything made of ivory until the year 2050.  If you have something made of elephant tusks, you can keep it, you just can't sell it until the year 2050.   In the mean time we can use some incredibly impressive-looking plastics out of which we can make our trivia decorations.
