What Is a Cash Cow

A cash cow is a term used to describe a highly lucrative activity, product, or business -- one that has an unusually high rate of return (a high profit margin) . It's something that brings in a lot of money with relatively time or little effort. The term is a metaphor for a dairy cow that, once purchased and paid for, can be milked regularly at relatively little cost and minimum maintenance. You'll find a number of major cash cows mentioned or described below on this page.

The Ultimate Cash Cow

Imagine for a moment that you have been asked to design a cash cow - a money machine - a free ticket to anywhere and everywhere. Imagine that you have to include in your design the ability to legally pilfer (embezzle, steal, make off with) billions of dollars and not never get caught, disgraced, chastised, punished, or penalized in any way. Imagine that you have to find a product to sell that cost you nothing or almost nothing to produce. Imagine that you're product has to be considered by others to be very valuable, and at the same time, your product has to be both infinitely reproducible and limited in supply. Imagine that you have to set up your business so that you are completely in control and that you have no competitors selling your product. Imagine that your product has to produce billions of dollars in profits each and every year.

That product already exists. Do you know what it is? You may, but billions of people don't have a clue. They think what is described above is a fantasy. I assure you it's a real as your nose.

The owners of this cash cow are quite pleased that the public doesn't understand what they have. The cash cow described above is in plain sight, but it's not recognized for what it is. The Cash Cows of the Super-Wealthy

For the super-wealthy, the stock market is a perfect cash cow. The super-wealthy have billions of dollars invested in the stock market. Money comes in from their investments, they take out what they want to spend, and leave the rest in the stock market as an investment. The investment money generates even more money. It becomes an endless source of money with all but no effort. They could, and many have, pulled their original investments out of the stock market and put that money into tangible assets that are not vulnerable to a financial crash.

With the money generated by this endless cash cow, the super-wealthy live opulent life styles, and as a prudent investor would do, they regularly take a portion of the profits out of their investment portfolio and buy tangible assets such gold and real estate.

Thus their wealth grows and grows, and unless they are incredibly stupid or unless they have a self destruction wish buried in their subconscious minds, they pass the cash cow on to their children and grandchildren.

More Cash Cows

When one examines the activities of the very small, but very determined and very vocal minority of right-wing, ultra-conservative Christian leaders, one finds that they have two very profitable cash cows, both of which are based on illusions, and neither of which have any scientific basis whatsoever. One is called The Rapture° and the other is their forced motherhood war.

Still another area filled with cash cows is the multi-billion-dollar, illegal drug industry. Here's just one example: Marijuana is a plant that grow wild and can be grown almost anywhere by almost anyone.
